Tortilis Camp African Safaris

Tortilis Camp Hotel is a luxury tented camp, located on the edge of Amboseli National Game Reserve - Kenya's ultimate elephant country, on the southern boarder of Kenya, overlooking Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli Tortilis Camp is named after the Tortilis Acacia (the Umbrella Thorn Tree); a charming rustic tented camp built into the side of a hill, facing the foothills of Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. As you walk into camp, your first view across the tree-studded plains towards the snow-capped mountain stops you in your tracks. The camp nestles in abundant trees and shrubs, bustling with bird life.

Theirs a Feeling of disbelief and awe hit you as you arrive at Tortilis Camp, facing the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro as the sun dazzles the white snowcap. The luxury 5 star camp won the British Airways Regional Travel Award for ecotourism and has earned an international reputation for its commitment to the environment with its rustic simplicity, unobtrusive design and attention to comfort without compromising the ecosystem. At the centre of Tortilis Camp hotel, there is a good sized swimming pool, whilst above on the hill there is a relaxing lounge area with lots of interesting coffee table wildlife books.

Game watching and Birding, coupled with the seemingly endless landscapes gives Tortilis hotel the edge of an excellent place to be all year round. The amazing camp is 4 hrs drive from Nairobi and 2 hrs from Mombassa. This charming, rustic tented camp, shaded by a natural forest of Acacia Tortilis thorn trees is a magical escape from the hustle and bustle of life in the fast lane

Children are welcome at Tortilis Camp. Early mealtimes and a baby-listening service are available, and during the day our experienced guides know how to make a bush walk or safari game drive 'come alive' for young guests.
In the heat of the day, parents can relax by the swimming pool whilst kids enjoy a refreshing dip, with iced-drinks available from the poolside bar.
Amboseli is a place of contrasts: during the hot dry season, mirages appear on the dusty horizon; year around, the elephant herds follow their ancient rituals, migrating daily from the Tortilis forests to the swamps. In the green season water birds: Flamingo, Pelican. Egyptian Geese flock to the park and the arid plains turn emerald green overnight.

In Amboseli, the traditional cultural heritage is strong: the Maasai communities adhere to an age-old lifestyle, herding and trading cattle; a life which they will share with you in their Manyattas (Maasai homes), a circle of dung and mud huts protected by a barrier of thorns against the predators.
Tortilis Camp has raised funds to build a school for the local villages; visits to the school and neighboring villages can be arranged.

At Tortilis Camp, Maasai Guides lead walks into the bush, passing on knowledge of traditional medicinal and uses of local flora and Maasai folklore.
A walk in the bush is part of the magic of a safari: following the spoor of the animals passing camp the night before, smelling the crushed leaves where animals have fed, listening to the bird calls and watching them overhead, this way you touch and feel the wild.
