Tanzania's Serengeti National park is exceptional by any standards, but it's also something that you really need to understand before you book your Migration safari. The Serengeti National is a large park stretching from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, all the way out to Lake Victoria and up as far as the Masai Mara Kenya, the migratory animals range across this whole area.

Which areas of the Serengeti you tour is criticaland will depend on when you are traveling  This can make a huge difference to what you see;  on the one hand this could be massed herds of wildebeest, on the other it could be hordes of tourists. There are some excellent safari tented camps and lodge in the Serengeti from luxury lodges, to seasonal mobile camps and - if you don't mind helping stick up your tent to save a bit of money - an excellent light mobile camping option. The annual Wildebeest Migration in Masai Mara and Serengeti game reserves is the most spectacular wildlife show in the world. Girraffes at Serengeri Migration Safaris

Every year, between August and November, about 2 million wildebeest and zebras move in search of greener pasture and water as seasons change. Although the wildebeest migration timing varies, the best time to get a glimpse of the dramatic event is between June and August when the wildebeest gather in preparation to cross the renowned Grumeti River. Numerous predators such as lions, hyenas, cheetah, leopard and a host of carnivores can be spotted hovering around the area waiting for a chance to strike the weak prey. The wildebeest make their arrival in Masai Mara between August and September, although at times they arrive as early as July. The animals remain in the Masai Mara National Park between October and November before gradually returning to Serengeti.  This usually happens between December and January.

The Masai Mara National Reserve, located in the southwest Kenya on the border of Tanzania, is the most popular game park in Kenya. Although it is relatively smaller in size compared to other Kenyan national parks, Masai Mara is home to an amazing concentration of wildlife. It is therefore one of the most popular Kenya safaris holiday destination. The Masai Mara national park borders the Serengeti plains along its southern end and it is nourished by the Mara River.

The river has plenty of hippos and crocodiles that make the Annual Wildebeest Migration a really dangerous task. The Tanzania Serengeti Annual Animal Migration Route

The wildebeest migrate in a clockwise direction from the Tanzania Serengeti in the South to the Kenya Masai Mara in the north and then back again. The cycle is an annual event and the exact timing is dictated by the rain. When the water and grazing disappear in one area due to a seasonal drought the wildebeest need move along to where the seasonal rains are falling to survive by finding new grazing and water. The wildebeest have to cross a number of rivers in their perilous but amazing 300 mile journey like the Grumeti and the Mara river in the north and this is where a lot of them don't make it falling prey to crocodiles and drowning. Only the very fittest survive. They are also preyed on by lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena as they have no choice but to move through the territories occupied by these predators in their quest for fresh grass. The predators have a food bonanza when the migration passes through their territory. Zebras at Serengeti Migration Safaris

The Best Time to Experience the Serengeti Wildebeest Migration Safari

It's important to remember that there are no guarantees when it comes to the timing of the animal migration in Kenya & Tanzania. It's all dependant on the rain and the seasons start at different times every year which means the herds might not be where historically they should be. You can make a rough estimate based on the past and hope that things run accordingly. Historically the times to see the migration in the Serengeti are...
January: The massive herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle are to be found on the plains of the southern Serengeti.
February: The wildebeest begin foaling and they do this at roughly the same time with all the predators in close attendance. Many people only want to see the migration and don't realise that this is a comparable wildlife spectacle. One of the best times to see the predators.
March-April: Heavy rains are approaching and the grazing is starting to get worse. The herd begins to move northwards along the western corridor of the Serengeti.
May-June: The herd moves towards the Grumeti controlled area where there is still good grazing and they begin to cross the Grumeti river where crocodiles lie in wait for their annual feast and you find the scenes occurring that has made the wildebeest migration famous in so many wildlife documentaries.
July-August: The herd is drawn ever northwards towards the Masai Mara Kenya in their quest for better grazing. They have one more dangerous river to cross, the Mara, before they receive their reward in the sweet grazing plains of Kenya.
