Migration Camp
Migration Camp Serengeti - The Lounge
Migration Camp is apermanent luxury safari tented camp in Serengeti National Park Tanzania. Migration Camp Hotel is located in the Northern Coridor of the Serengeti Game Reserve on the Tanzania Annual Great Wildebeest Migration route between the Serengeti Park Tanzania and the Masai Mara Park Kenya along the bank of the Grumeti River.

Migration Safari Camp is raised up on the side of an impressive kopje known as Poacher's Lookout, with broad views north over the undulating Serengeti hills and beyond to the plains of the Maasai Mara, this part of the park is a quiet backwater compared with the more toured areas to the south and the very busy Maasai Mara to the north, in fact less than 1% of the total visitors to the eco-system of the Serengeti tour this remote corner, Up here you can really experience the wild side of the Serengeti. The annual animal migration seasons at Serengeti Migration camp are centred around July and November when the herds pass through

the area, sometimes crossing the river right in front of Migration Hotel. Game-viewing from the breakfast terrace can be superb; additionally there is good resident game throughout the year, especially lion, leopard and elephant. Migration Lodge is fundamentally a traditional tented safari camp, but with some elements of a more modern camp design and cuisine, The intention is to provide very comfortable surroundings, but without losing contact with the environment. Eating outdoors under the stars and sleeping under canvas, listening to the sounds of the bush.

Perhaps in contradiction to this traditional approach there is incorporated a swimming pool into the camp. As you arrive at Migration Camp, you walk down a wooden walkway to reach the main reception and lounge area. This is all housed within one large structure, which is partially canvas and partially stone. One side of this is totally open, which gives it a lovely breezy and outdoorsy feel. Then the large comfortable leather sofas and hand crafted bronze statues result in an old-style colonial air to the camp. The swimming pool sits just below this lounge area.

Sopa Lodge Migration Camp offers wildlife migration safaris through the Serengeti, and is an ideal base to savour the vastness and variety of this area whilst enjoying quality and individual service. Migration Camp is the property of the Elewana Group of Hotels, which is itself part of the Sopa Hotels & Lodges, purveyors of some of the finest lodge and camp accommodation in Kenya & Tanzania.

Outside View Serengeti Migration Camp
Readers of Conde Nast Traveler named Elewana's Migration Camp in the "Best Resort in Africa category, in the magazine's 21st Annual Readers' Choice Awards. Taking 11th place overall in the Africa category, the results place Migration Camp as Number 1 in East Africa.

An exciting arrival awaits you when your safari vehicle parks on the kopjes and then cross the bridge and enter the luxury world of Migration Camp Tanzania. You are cheerily met with the wet washer and chilled juice on check-in which is eagerly accepted after game-drives, Porters deliver luggage to the room, which can be a decent walk from the dining and pool areas.

total privacy offered to each tent is un-marched. Although the tents are not cosmetically appealing from the outside, on entry you are delivered to another world, reminiscent of colonial days, the leather arm chair, the writing desk, and the rocking

chairs on the deck. The beds are undoubtedly the most comfortable beds on Kenya and Tanzania safari circuit; and the quilts enabled you to melt into sleep. The bathrooms are spacious, with double basins, flushing toilet and shower recess. However, hot water runs on solar heating, thus showers are recommended during the afternoon or early evening. The morning shower wakes you smartly with just the chill taken out of it.

Migration Camp Hotel Accommodation
The Migration Camp offers its guests secluded luxury and a feeling of space created by the peaceful vantage-points on surrounding hillocks and by the river. All guests’ facilities, including the twenty individual sleeping tents with tiled bathroom, W.C., shower, hot and cold water and electricity and balcony, are orientated westward towards the spectacular northern Serengeti sunsets. The honeymoon tent is located away from the other tents in a raised position on Poacher's Lookout. Migration Camp also has a family tent especially for visitors on a family safari in Serengeti, which is made up of two standard tents, joined by a large shared bathroom, which accommodates a family of up to six people in comfort.

There are 12 doubles (1 queen size bed), 7 twins (2 twin beds) and 1 honeymoon suite. The doubles can be converted to triples to accommodate two adults and one child. The Migration Camp tents are pleasantly spaced along the Grumeti River assuring relative privacy with numbers 1 - 13 on the south side of camp and 14 – 20 on the north side of camp. As previously cautioned, it is a long trek from the tents to the main lodge facilities, which could be a problem for some travelers. Due to the location next to the Grumeti River, hippo and buffalo frequently graze the immediate area during the night. You will be escorted to and from dinner each evening to assure your safety.

The tents are massive and encompass 475 square feet of internal room space. The Migration camp honeymoon suite is truly magnificent. It is set further back from the river and partially up a hill allowing for beautiful views. The floor plan of the tent is very similar but the notable differences are the large private deck and private Jacuzzi tucked against the hill under the stars. Honeymooners receive the royal treatment and wine or champagne will adorn the Jacuzzi during the evenings.

Migration Camp Hotel Restaurant
The main public areas comprise of a two level lounge and bar area. Adjacent to the lounge is the swimming pool, restaurant area and breakfast terrace. The meals are served in the main restaurant, and are prepared in international and local Tanzania flavors by professionally trained chefs. Set along a stone pathway is the dining area, which like the lounge has a total open front, with views across the river. Guests dine separately here; with a bit of luck, you might be able to get a table outside on the veranda.
Lanterns Walkway in Serengeti
Adjacent to the main lounge is the Cigar Bar which is a welcoming little lounge area, with a stone roof. It's a comfortable, quiet and cozy place to relax. Persian rugs are spread across the floor and there are vast leather armchairs to snuggle in to. You will even find a working record player.

Immediately above the cigar bar is the camp's Sunset Deck - a vast wooden deck, with a fireplace and a number of directors' chairs. Guests tend to gather here in the evenings to watch the sunset over the Lobo River, whilst enjoying a drink from the bar. In front of the main lounge area, is Serengeti Migration Camps swimming pool with a number of loungers set around it. The pool area also has a shaded deck, from where you can lounge and look out over the trees and Lobo River.

Meals at Migration Camp are superb. Wake up calls are taken the night before and coffee or tea is delivered to your tent in the morning at the predetermined time.
Breakfast boxes can be arranged for early morning game drives or you can enjoy breakfast on the outside patio next to the dinning tent. Breakfast consists of a mixed buffet with orders taken for eggs, omelets, bacon, toast, pancakes etc. The buffet consists of yogurt, nuts, cereal, breads, fruit and juice. Similarly to breakfast, you have your choice of dinning in for lunch or enjoying a lunch box if you plan a full day adventure game drive.

The choice is yours. Dinner is the main event at Migration Camp and it is one of the few places where everyone joins together for dinner at one long dinner with the camp managers, Peter and Anita. When at capacity, two tables are arranged and Peter and Anita split up to lead each table. At just about every other lodge in Tanzania (with the exception of Kusini and sometimes Olduvai, Mawe Ninga and Plantation), guests always eat at separate tables.

It is certainly a pleasure meeting with other guests over dinner and listening to Peter’s impressive bush stories. The feedback we have received has been overwhelming with regards to dinners here and it is usually one of everyone’s favorite aspects about the camp. Dinner is a sumptuous four courses with the main course being a choice of either chicken or beef or pasta. Dinners are on a 7-day rotation at Migration Camp ensuring each night you will enjoy a unique and delicious meal. All drinks including soft drinks, beer, wine and spirits are included in our packages at Migration Camp.

Migration Camp Hotel Activities
Migration Camp is usually incorporated into our fly-in safaris and drive-back animal migration safari package itineraries at the beginning of your Tanzania wildebeest migration safari. You will most likely be arriving at Lobo Airstrip (1hour drive) on your regional flight departing from the Arusha Air Strip. A night or two at the beginning of your safari at Migration Camp is a superb way to kick off your adventure before traveling to other areas of the Serengeti and onwards to the Ngorongoro Crater and the other great parks of Northern Tanzania.

Flying into the wild Northern Serengeti on your first safari day is a superb introduction to Tanzania. From Migration Camp, it is about a 2-hour drive south to the Seronera area of the Central Serengeti. It is a fairly long drive to the Central Serengeti but this is more than made up for by the stunning scenery and abundant wildlife. Keep a look out for lion and cheetah off from the main road as they are regularly sighted. Migration Camp can also be incorporated into your itinerary at the end of your adventure in the Serengeti.

The lodge does make an excellent spot to unwind, relax and enjoy your last night or two on safari. Alternatively, Serengeti Migration Camp has three resident guides and its own safari vehicles. They usually run morning and an afternoon game drives. Though you could also head out with a packed lunch for a full day Serengeti migration safari as well. This will give you the chance to explore further and deeper into the park.

Sun Downer in Serengeti Camp
This northern area of the Serengeti is especially exciting to visit during the months of July and August, or possibly around November, when the great wildebeest migration is likely to be in the area. If the Serengeti migration isn't near camp, then you'll probably have to drive about 20km to the Lobo Kopjies in order to find reliably good game-viewing. Of course, being quite far north in the Serengeti, there's usually a delightful lack of other vehicles around here.
Serengeti Migration Camp is 20 kilometers from Lobo airstrip – this is a 45 minute drive.

Serengeti Migration Camp will happily accept children.
Serengeti Migration Camp can provide child-minding. Though parents should be aware that the child minder will be a member of the house-keeping team. Parents should be aware that this is a wildlife area and the Serengeti Migration Safari Camp is not fenced. Children should be supervised at all times and should not walk around

the camp alone. The managers are first-aid trained and have a first-aid box for minor injuries. For any serious incidents, the camp has links with flying doctors to Nairobi.
Serengeti Migration Camp can exchange small amounts – but it would need to be less than $100. Serengeti Migration Camp will accept MasterCard and Visas with a charge of 3%. However they cannot accept Amex.

The Great Annual Animal Migration Safari Information
The annual migration of the Serengeti and Masai Mara is one of the safari highlights of Africa. The wildebeest migration is not limited to the confines of the Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara National Park. Instead, the migration covers a vast area known as the Serengeti eco-system and Masai Mara. When planning a tour to see the migration it is vitally important to understand the best place to be based at any point in time. The Wildebeest and Zebra basically move in a huge clockwise direction. The below monthly movement maps are roughly according to the movements in 2007, but these should only be used as simplified approximations. The exact route and timing of the migrating Wildebeest and Zebra is dependent on climatic conditions. The below maps show the migratory path of the migrating herds. The best time see the migration is when they are crossing the Grumeti River in the Western Serengeti or while they are crossing the Mara River into the Masai Mara National Park.

Migration Map December - The migration is settled in the short grass lands on the southern plains. Game moves into the Ngorongoro Crater. Seronera has permanent water and the migration will move south if it rains. Zebra are foaling.

The Seronera or Ndutu areas are the best areas to be based for the migration. Best Camps: Ndutu Safari Lodge, Serengeti Mobile Camps, Kusini Lodge, Migration Camp

This is one of the best times to be in the Serengeti as the migration is crossing the Grumeti River into the Grumeti Game Reserve. The Grumeti crocodiles lie in wait to enjoy their annual feast. This is one of the highlights of the annual migration and the time most people consider to be the real migration. The best place to be based is along the Grumeti River. This is the start of one of the great spectacles of the migration, the crossing of the Mara River where crocodiles make the crossing precarious for the wildebeest. The migratory animals are looking for the sweet grass of the Kenya's Masai Mara National Park. The best place to be based is in the western part of the Maasai Mara, where visitors can wait across the Mara River and watch the drama unfold.
