Maralal Safari Lodge Activities
A) The Rift Valley viewpoint at Losiolo (World’s End about 20kms from the lodge) is a spectacle not to be missed. Nor should you miss a visit to the ‘frontier’ township where a flourishing market offers Turkana dolls and artifacts from the Samburu and Turkana people.
B) There is marvelous walking in the adjacent forest. Game/Bird walks with our Game rangers.
C) Visit to Samburu Manyatta including a working blacksmith and herbalist.
Samburu Dancing and cultural show can be arranged. Short camel rides or longer camel treks can be also be organised.
D) Visit to the house where Mzee Jomo Kenyatta was interned, now a museum of historical significance.
E) On a longer stay guests should take the opportunity of visiting Baragoi. The area is also of interest (beryl, petrified wood etc.) to “rock-hounds”.
F) If time permits we recommend a half day game drive on Mugie Ranch (60km) to see Lion and Cheetah, Elephant and Buffalo.

The Maralal National Reserve is one of Kenya's little known treasures. Tucked away in the centre of the country amidst the Ol Doinyo Lenkiyo Mountains, Maralal completely surrounds the Samburu town of the same name. Within the Reserve's boundaries, eland, impala buffalo and zebra keep a watchful eye on predators such as the leopard and hyena. Seasonally, elephant pass through the Reserve descending from the forested hills to the north. The best viewing of wildlife in the Reserve is from the terrace at the Maralal Safari Lodge. Game viewing is both by day and floodlight by night. At the lodge, leopards are baited from a small forest nearby and can be viewed from a specially constructed blind. In all directions from Maralal, the scenery is beautiful and the procession of wildlife sharing land with Samburu herders is spectacular. Related to the Maasai futher south, the Samburu warriors of Maralal, dressed in their traditional clothing, live in symbiosis with the environment and wildlife around them.

Despite its beautiful landscape and wide assortment of wildlife, Maralal National Reserve receives relatively few visitors in relation to the Samburu reserves to the east. This helps makes Maralal a truly enjoyable destination. The rooky track which leads north to Lake Turkana passes across the moorlands (much of which is now under wheat cultivation) and forests of the Leroghi plateau, a seemingly endless area of tranquil beauty. 15 km from the township a dry weather track leads west across the plateau to the edge of the Great Rift Valley.

Here at a place called Losiolo the valley wall is sheer and the vast, almost overwhelming, panorama totally breathtaking. In all directions from Maralal is majestic scenery whose grandeur is enhanced by its consort with wildlife and by the calm dignity of the herdsmen and their herds. The Samburu who inhabit this vast and beautiful landscape are close relatives of the Maasai to the south. Striding fearlessly across the plains the warriors in their finery are a noble and fascinating sight.

Maralal Safari Camping - The only camping safaris and low budget camping and hotel facilities in Maralal are at the Maralal Safaris Hostel and Campsite located 4 kms south of Maralal town. This is a recognized hostel with many good facilities, including a restaurant and lounge. The campsite and hostel are located on a nice hill where it’s possible to view game, despite the fence erected to protect visitors against more aggressive animals.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL NAIROBI
On arrival our Courtesy Bus through the city transfers you to the Norfolk Hotel. Visit the Karen Blixen Museum and the Ngong Hills of the Out of Africa fame. Also feed the Rothschild giraffe at the Center for Endangered Wildlife, coming back to the Norfolk for overnight.

DAY 2: NAIROBI - ABERDARES NATIONAL PARK
Early start, driving north through agricultural plantations to the town of Mweiga for lunch at the Aberdare Country Club. After lunch you are ferried by 4WD vehicles up the forest to The Ark where you spend the evening viewing from the hotel balconies the numerous wildlife that come to drink at the salt lick close to this eco lodge. Dinner and overnight at the Ark. Hotel

DAY 3: ABERDARES - MT. KENYA SAFARI CLUB
After breakfast we proceed a few kilometers north to Mt. Kenya Safari Club, a luxurious retreat with spectacular views across the forested slopes to the snow-capped peaks of Mt. Kenya. Among the activities available within the grounds of these manicured lawns and ornamental ponds are - swimming, tennis, golf, bowling, croquet, trout fishing and game viewing. Lunch, dinner and overnight at the Club. (Remember that a tie and jacket for the gentlemen and evening dress for ladies is necessary for dinner at Mt. Kenya Safari Club).

DAY 4: MT. KENYA SAFARI CLUB - SHABA GAME RESERVE
Continue northwards after breakfast arriving in time for lunch at the Shaba Game Reserve. Afternoon is spent viewing game within this wildlife sanctuary. Dinner and overnight at the Sarova Shaba which is set in a semi-desert oasis in the renowned "Born Free" country of the late Joy Adamson.

DAY 5: SAROVA SHABA - SAMBURU NATIONAL PARK
Leave the Shaba in the mid morning for Samburu National Park. Lunch is taken at the Samburu Intrepids on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River. Afternoon game drive to flash out the species that are unique to this northern wildlife sanctuary including the antelope giraffe(gerenuk), Gravy's zebra, Somali ostrich and the majestic Beisa's Oryx, among other animals. Dinner and overnight at this Luxury Tented Camp.

DAY 6: SAMBURU NATIONAL PARK
another day is spent driving through the park in search of the numerous wildlife that is to be found here. Lunch, dinner and overnight at Samburu Intrepids.

DAY 7: SAMBURU - MARSABIT GAME RESERVE
Traverse this dry desert region to the Marsabit Game Reserve after breakfast. Arrive at the Marsabit Lodge in time for lunch. Afternoon game drives in this land of misty forests and beautiful crater lakes. Among the wild animals most likely to be seen are elephants, lions, leopard, reticulated giraffe and the graceful greater kudu. Dinner and overnight at the Marsabit Lodge

DAY 8: MARSABIT - MARALAL
Continue through desert country to Maralal Town, one of the most colorful towns in Kenya with the Samburu tribesmen resplendent in their red ochre adding to the beauty. An unforgettable sight is of the antelopes, zebras and giraffes mingling with the townspeople going through their daily chores. Lunch, dinner and overnight at Maralal Safari Lodge.

DAY 9: MARALAL - BARINGO
After breakfast leave the country of the Samburu people and proceed southwards to Lake Baringo. Lunch at Sheraton Baringo then proceed by boat in the mid afternoon to the Luxury Tented Camp on Ol Kolwa Island in the lake. Dinner and overnight at Lake Baringo Hotel

DAY 10: BARINGO - NAIVASHA
Most of the morning is spent bird watching or boating in Lake Baringo. Over 450 species of birds have been sighted in Baringo and the resident ornithologist is an encyclopedia of knowledge on tropical birds. After lunch we continue to

Lake Naivasha Country Club. Arrive early for a game drive in the Hell's Gate National Park. Game to view includes buffalo, Maasai Giraffe, Eland, Coke's Heartebeest, Lion, Leopard and others. Havens for ornithologists, 103 species of birds have been recorded in the park. Dinner and overnight at the club.
DAY 11: NAIVASHA - NAIROBI
Spend the morning relaxing on the grounds of this small luxurious hotel that was formerly the farmhouse of a colonial settler, or alternatively boating in the lake or horse riding on the grounds or bird watching among the tropical vegetation. Leave Lake Naivasha after an early lunch for Nairobi. Evening shopping precedes dinner at the Carnivore Restaurant, then transfer to the airport for your flight back home.
