Klein`s Camp
Cosy Bed in Kleins Camp
Kleins Camp is a Luxury safari tented camp located on the north eastern edge of Serengeti National Park, northern Tanzania and Klein's Camp Lodge is one of the few private concessions adjacent to the park.

Camp Kleins hotel was built on the craggy quartzite and sandstone Kuka Hills that extend south from Kenya into the north-eastern corner of the Serengeti National Park. The Grumeti River, which has its source in the southern Kenyan hills, runs through the Klein's Camp concession, and its narrow strip of riverine forest is a distinctive feature.

Klein’s Camp sits within a 10,000 hectare private concession and provides guests with the ultimate private Serengeti experience. With Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Park to the north and the Tanzania Serengeti National Park to the west, the Klein’s Camp is one of the most strategically positioned wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and

is highly recommended for Serengeti Migration Safaris. At Kleins Camp Hotel thousands of wildebeest and zebra migrate at certain times of the year, in addition to excellent year-round game including lion, cheetah, leopard as well as many bird species. Action-packed night game-drives and extensive bush walks into the Serengeti are just some of the activities that guests can enjoy.

Kleins Camp is operated by CC Africa (Conservation Corporation Africa). CC Africa works hand in hand with its sister organisation Africa Foundation, and they operate  a series of hotels and lodges throughout East and South Africa all of the highest standard whose development and operation is tied in with the local communities, helping them to develop, educate their children and ensure adequate medical services. Klein's camp is relatively small located on a small shoulder of a hillside overlooking a broad lush valley, the area is rich in game life and particularly so in the period July till October. The safari camp offers several rondavels each with a verandah overlooking the valley and with double or twin bedded four poster beds and en-suite facilities. The bar has an old safari lodge style atmosphere with a central fire, comfortable seating, a small library and a fine panorama.

A further joy of Klein’s Camps location is that it is not bound by the rules of the Serengeti, so the maximum of 16 guests at the camp can enjoy night drives and safaris in open-sided vehicles, and walk in the surrounding bush. The entirety of Klein’s Camp is constructed and decorated with solid, good-quality furnishings and inspires a great sense of peace and comfort, enhanced by the knowledge that this is such a great distance from any other sign of civilization. The tents are were comfortable, elegant, and quiet. You will love the hot water bottles that are placed beneath the sheets each night!.

From up - Kleins Camp Serengeti
Klein’s Camp captures the very spirit of the Serengeti in the wild Africa and offers you a great deal of privacy and calm. The camp has a swimming pool where you can enjoy a post safari dip to cool off from the heat of the midday sun before partaking in the traditional climb up the small hill behind the camp to enjoy the fantastic views and beautifully presented sundowners.

The views from the leisure deck and dining area are equally impressive and the elegantly furnished lounge is the most delightful place to relax and enjoy a wildlife reference book from the extensive collection in the library. The delicious aromas of the traditional African meals, prepared with vegetables and herbs grown in the camps own organic garden will call you to the dinner table which is situated in the main dining area; complete with a big open fire place.

If you prefer a more romantic setting for your dinners the camp staff will set a table for you in nearby bush clearing where the fine china, silver and glassware will glisten in the soft hues of your candlelit table. The wildlife is prolific and the resident giraffe and elephant which can be spotted roaming the plains from the camp will keep you entertained for hours. The Serengeti is also home to an abundance of large herbivores, 35 species of plains game and the magnificent lions, hyenas, cheetahs

and leopards that hunt them. A stay at Klein’s Camp is incomplete without a cultural visit to one of the local Maasai villages. You will gain a rare insight into the traditional lifestyles of the Maasai tribes. These nomadic pastoralists are descended from the ancient Nilotic and Cushitic people whose bloodline dates back to over 10 centuries. Klein's Camp is a small, luxury lodge that was originally built as a hunting camp, due to its elevation, there are spectacular views over the valley and the woodland savanna - Acacia and desert date trees dominate the undulating hills here. The design of Klein's Camp has been kept practical and simple; they are a short walk away from the rooms which ensures as much privacy and quiet as possible. Every pair of cottages also shares its own private butler. Again, these cottages have been furnished to very high standards.

The swimming pool at Klein's sits at 6000ft and is close to the bedrooms. It is a large, kidney shaped pool with a shaded seating area. There are comfortable sun-loungers on a paved, stone terrace area around the pool. The pool itself is fresh water and has lovely views of the surrounding bush. As it has been set back from the main path and there is a brick wall and bushes, it has quite a private feel to it.
Birdlife is also prolific in the Loliondo area - there are 345 species recorded here. A pair of black Verreaux's eagles have made their eyrie close to camp and can often be seen soaring over the plains. There are also more common birds in the area, such as, the pygmy falcon and the slate-coloured boubou.

Kleins Camp Hotel Accommodation
Kleins Camp contains just 10 intimate, turn-of-the-century style cottages of local rock and thatch. The rich wooden floors and serene, classic interiors are reminiscent of the heydays of rugged safaris. Each spacious cottage has an en suite bathroom. With showerheads the size of a dinner platter, the spacious enclosed showers offer you the sensory equivalent of an indoor cloud-burst. From each private terrace, a diversity of resident wildlife, including elephant, may be viewed in the valley. Round stone walls and polished floors beautifully offset the soft cream and gossamer-fabric interiors.

The décor at Klein's resembles an old Tanganyika coffee plantation house. The camp has a large, beautifully furnished bar/living area, plunge pool, a curio shop which stocks locally made Maasai crafts and a leisure deck. The restaurant and lounge command spectacular views of the valley and surrounding hills. Day and night safaris in open safari vehicles are led by experienced tour rangers and guides.

Swimming Pool - Kleins Camp Serengeti
Serengeti National Park
It was 1913 and great stretches of Africa were still unknown to the white man when Stewart Edward White, an American hunter, set out from Nairobi. Pushing south, he recorded: "We walked for miles over burnt out country... Then I saw the green trees of the river, walked two miles more and found myself in paradise."

He had found Serengeti. In the years since White's excursion under "the high noble arc of the cloudless African sky," Serengeti has come to symbolize paradise to many of us.

The Maasai, who had grazed their cattle on the vast grassy plains for millennia had always thought so. To them it was Siringitu - "the place where the land moves on forever." The Serengeti region encompasses the Serengeti National Park itself, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Maswa Game Reserve, the Loliondo, Grumeti and

Ikorongo Controlled Areas and the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. Over 90,000 tourists visit the Park each year.
Two World Heritage Sites and two Biosphere Reserves have been established within the 30,000 km² region. It's unique ecosystem has inspired writers from Ernest Hemingway to Peter Mattheissen, filmakers like Hugo von Lawick and Alan Root as well as numerous photographers and scientists.

The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the oldest on earth. The essential features of climate, vegetation and fauna have barely changed in the past million years. Early man himself made an appearance in Olduvai Gorge about two million years ago. Some patterns of life, death, adaptation and migration are as old as the hills themselves. A unique combination of diverse habitats enables it to support more than 30 species of large harbivores and nearly 500 species of birds. Its landscape, originally formed by volcanic activity, has been sculptured by the concerted action of wind, rain and sun. It now varies from open grass plains in the south, savannah with scattered acacia trees in the centre, hilly, wooded grassland in the north, to extensive woodland and black clay plains to the west. Small rivers, lakes and swamps are scattered throughout.

In the south-east rise the great volcanic massifs and craters of the Ngorongoro Highlands. Each area has its own particular atmosphere and wildlife.
In the open grass plains during the rainy months from November to May hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and Burchell's zebra congregate. The area is the starting point for one of the great wonders of the world: the Serengeti annual migration. Towards the end of May when the grass becomes dry and exhausted, the wildebeest start to mass in huge armies. All is far from peaceful, for it is the rutting season and each male tries to establish a stamping ground. Eventually, after several dummy runs, the animals begin their trek in a column several miles long to the permanent waters in the north of the Park. After moving westwards, the migration divides by some uncanny instinct, one group turning north-east and the other due north. Once started, little stops the stampede: hundreds often drown at a time in the broad Mara river in the north.

Today, the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and the Maasai Mara Game Reserve across the border in Kenya, protect the greatest and most varied collection of terrestrial wildlife on earth, and one of the last great migratory systems still intact.
Although outnumbered eight to one, the zebra join in the migration, maintaining their family units of about a dozen members, each with a dominant stallion. Their yelping bark combines with the bleating of the wildebeest to give the typical sound of the migration. Lion, cheetah, hyena and hunting dog follow the wildebeest and zebra, making sure that only the fittest survive. In November, when the grazing is finished in the North, this army of animals surges back to the now green pastures of the south, where they calve and mate before starting the entire cycle again. Normally, the best time to see the animals here is during January and February.
The Serengeti's climate is usually warm and dry. The main rainy season is from March to May, with short rains falling from October to November. The amount of rainfall increases from about 508mm on the plains in the lee of the Ngorongoro Highlands to about 1,200mm on the shores of Lake Victoria. All is lush and green after the rains, but a gradual drying up follows which restricts plant growth and encourages the animals to migrate in search of permanent waters. With altitudes ranging from 920 to 1,850 metres - higher than most of Europe - mean temperatures vary from 15 degrees to 25 degrees Celsius. It is coldest from June to October, particularly in the evenings.

The Serengeti is the jewel in the crown of Tanzania's protected areas, which altogether make up some 14% of the country's land area, a conservation record that few other countries can match.
