Many lodges have waterholes and other tricks to lure the wild animals around dawn and sunset to the lodge or camp, so you can spot them without having to go outside. The advantage of this type is that it’s pretty nice to have a hot bath and meal waiting for you after driving for a whole day on dusty roads. If you stay in tented camps or lodges, prizes are roughly between $290 - $500 per person per day. Exchange Rate in Kenya
 - Currency: Kenyan Shilling (KSh) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of KSh1000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5. Coins are in denominations of KSh 40, 20, 10, 5, 50cts, 10cts, and 5cts. There are no restrictions on the foreign exchange you may bring to the Kenya country. You will need to get a letter of authorization if you wish to take more than Kshs. 100,000/- out of the country. Currency exchange: Money can be exchanged at the major Kenya banks and the numerous Kenya Foreign exchange bureaus that can be found on literary every other street. There are also several of them at the airport. There are over 170 ATMs. Barclays has the largest network followed by Standard Chartered Bank. Most ATM's serve a majority of the international credit cards like Visa, Master etc. Credit & debit cards: These are all widely accepted. Major Kenya hotels and big outlets now accept payment by credit card. Cards accepted include Visa, Master Card and Travelers cheques: These can be changed at banks. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travelers are advised to take travelers cheques in US Dollars or Pounds Sterling. The value of the Kenyan Shilling fluctuates so it's best to check in with a currency converter just before you go. Traveler's checks are probably the best and safest way to take money with you.  - All major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, Diners Club and American Express) are widely accepted by many Kenyan hotels, Kenya travel agencies, Kenya car rentals companies, Kenya airlines, restaurants, and city shops. Cash, especially in lower denominations, is needed in a bargaining situation. Throughout this guide, the following abbreviations are used: AE, American Express; DC, Diners Club; MC, MasterCard; and V, Visa. It's a good idea to inform your credit-card company before you travel Kenya, especially if you're going abroad and don't travel internationally very often. Otherwise, the credit-card company might put a hold on your card owing to unusual activity—not a good thing halfway through your trip. Record all your credit-card numbers—as well as the phone numbers to call if your cards are lost or stolen—in a safe place, so you're prepared should something go wrong. MasterCard, Visa, and American Express all have general numbers you can call collect if you're abroad. Kenya Banks
 open at 9 on weekdays and close at 3; on Saturday they open at 9 and close at 11. Banks are closed on Sunday. Many banks can perform foreign-exchange services or international electronic transfers. Try to avoid banks at their busiest times—at 9 and from noon to 2 on Friday, and at month's end—unless you're willing to arrive early and lineup with the locals. Major Banks in Kenya are Barclay's, Kenya Commercial, and Standard Chartered. Major international credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are accepted at Kenyan banks and by ATMs. It is wise to bring two ATM cards for different accounts whenever traveling abroad, both in case one is stolen or "eaten" by a machine, and to give yourself an option in case a machine takes only one or the other type. Most ATMs accept Cirrus, Plus, Maestro, Visa Electron, and Visa and MasterCard. The best place to withdraw cash is at an indoor ATM, preferably one guarded by a security officer. If you're unsure where to find a safe ATM, ask a merchant. If anyone approaches you while you're using an ATM, immediately press cancel. Passport and Visas to Kenya
 Passports should be current and valid for at least six months after your stay in Kenya. Visas are required. Before you travel to Kenya, you should request your visa from any Kenyan embassy, consulate, or high commission, or from any British embassy in countries where there is no Kenyan embassy. Visas take at least 24hours to process plus mailing time if you live at a distance. You need to send two passport photos with the application and your passport, along with proof of your ability to leave Kenya such as an air ticket. Although visitors are usually given six months visa, the length of stay granted at the airport may be less. It is important to know what is granted so that you can renew your length of stay if necessary. It is also possible to purchase a visa on arrival at the airport. US passport holders need a visa to enter Kenya, but they can get it at the airport or border crossing when they arrive in Kenya (it is preferable to have the US$50 in cash with you). If you want to plan ahead then you can apply for a visa in the US. Details and forms can be found on the Kenyan Embassy web site. Nationals from some Commonwealth countries do not need a visa with the exception of Antigua, Bermuda, Guyana, India, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the UK. All nationals of other countries require a visa. Tourist visas are valid for 30 days. For up to date information see the Kenyan Embassy web site. There are two consulate locations in the US, Los Angeles & New York. A single-entry visa costs US$50 and a multiple entry visa US$100. If you are planning on visiting just Kenya, then a single-entry is all you need. If your plans include crossing over to Tanzania/Zanzibar to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, visit the Serengeti or go see the gorillas in Rwanda then you'll need a multiple-entry visa if you wish to re-enter Kenya again.

Although there are currently no inoculations that you must have when traveling to Kenya, if you intend to visit other countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Egypt, or other such areas that may be deemed infected, you will need inoculations. Old clothes that you want to dispose are always appreciated by people like watchman or housekeeping staff. If you give to housekeeping staff does provide them with a note so that they are not accused of stealing your clothes! The landscape is very green during the rainy season and lodges are cheaper.
Kenya Weather & Climate
 - Kenya’s diverse geography means that temperature, rainfall and humidity vary widely, but there are effectively four distinct zones. The hot, rainy plateau of western Kenya has rainfall throughout the year, the heaviest usually during April, when as much as 200mm may be recorded, and the lowest in January, with an average of 40mm. Temperatures range from a minimum of 14°C to 18°C to a maximum of 30°C to 36°C throughout the year. The temperate Rift Valley and Central Highlands have perhaps the most agreeable climate in the country. Average temperatures vary from a minimum of 10°C to 14°C to a maximum of 22°C to 28°C. Rainfall varies from a minimum of 20mm in July to 200mm in April, falling in essentially two seasons – March to the beginning of June (the ‘long rains’) and October to the end of November (the ‘short rains’). Mt Kenya and the Aberdare Range are the country’s main water catchments, with falls of up to 3000mm per year recorded in these places. In the semiarid bush lands of northern and eastern Kenya temperatures vary from highs of up to 40°C during the day to less than 20°C at night. Rainfall in this area is sparse and, when it does occur, is often in the form of violent storms. July is usually the driest month, and November the wettest. The average annual rainfall varies between 250mm and 500mm. The consistently humid coast region has rainfall averages from 20mm in February to around 300mm in May. Kenya time zone
 The Kenya time zone is GMT/UTC +3. This means that Kenya’s time is three hours ahead Greenwich Mean Time. Kenya’s time zone makes it two hours ahead of cities like Paris and Rome, three hours ahead of London and Monrovia, eight hours ahead of New York City, and eleven hours ahead of Los Angeles. Time zone is a region on Earth that has a uniform, legally mandated standard time. Almost all time zones on land have legally defined borders which coincide with the borders of the country mandating the time or some subdivision thereof. Of the 40 time zones on land, most are offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) by a whole number of hours (UTC−12 to UTC+14), but a few are offset by 30 or 45 minutes from a nearby hourly zone. In addition to land time zones, there are 25 nautical time zones, all separated by lines of longitude. Most (UTC−11 to UTC+11) are 15° of longitude wide, which is one hour of Earth's rotation relative to the Sun, but an hourly zone in the central Pacific Ocean is split into two 7.5° wide zones (UTC±12) by the 180th meridian, part of which coincides with the International Date Line. Kenya Safety
 -Crime is a risk in Kenya and is well reported in the local and international press which tends to exaggerate the risk. Huge numbers of tourists come to Kenya each year and have no problem at all. Just be sensible and do not walk around at night, use taxis, do not carry large amounts of cash on you and make full use of the hotel safe for all valuables. Do not carry a bag that identifies you as a tourist. Watch out for con men and ignore people who come up to you with offers of services. Do not accept offers of food or drink for strangers in the street or on public transport as it could be drugged. In the unlikely event of being mugged do not resist and remember if you shout "thief" the mugger will be set upon by the crowd and most likely be killed and so best to move quietly away from the incident. If you go the police you will be involved in a lot of paper work and may have to spend time assisting the police find the criminal through an identification process. Car jacking is a potential crime if you are driving yourself. Be aware at stop junctions, check your rear view mirror that you are not being followed, and maintain a distance between you and the car in front. If you are car jacked do not resist, do not scream, follow instructions to the
letter, do not argue, keep your hands in view and be polite. If you remain calm an helpful then no harm should come to. In the event you are locked in the boot, try and break one of the rear lights and wave to the car behind you. There have been well reported terrorist incidents in both Nairobi and Mombassa. These have led to travel advisories being given. As in any country there remains a risk of terrorism but is a situation that is well monitored in Kenya and not representative of instability in Kenya but part of a world problem. The area on the far North West and north east is a dangerous area due to bandits and should not be visited. The Kenya Tourism Federation has established a security control centre to help ensure safety for visitors. They arrange assistance in the event of an incident involving visitors to Kenya. The centre operates a high frequency radio network and a tourist help line 02 604767 which accepts emergency calls 24/7. Coastal temperatures remain steadily hot for most of the year, but on the beach the humidity is kept at bay by the ocean breeze. The wettest months are April to May and there's also a short rainy season from October to November. Swahili Cultural festivals are often held during November and Ramadan may affect your vacation in this predominantly Muslim area of Kenya, Mount Kenya has permanent snow at its summit, so it's cold year round. At night at the higher elevations the temperature can drop as low as 14 Fahrenheit (-10 Celsius). Typically the early mornings on the mountain are sunny and dry, and clouds often form by noon. It is possible to hike Mount Kenya throughout the year but it gets more difficult during the rainy seasons from mid-March to mid-June and October to mid-December. The best time to go is between January - February, and July - October. Northern Kenya is a fairly arid region with little rainfall and abundant sunshine year round. This is camel country. Average temperatures vary between 104 and 68 Fahrenheit (40 and 20 Celsius). The best time to visit this area is June, July, August and December. Kenya Roads Condition
 Driving conditions in Kenya and East Africa are not straightforward. There may be obstacles on your route like stones and trees. Roads can have quite violent corrugations and a lot of the tarmac roads are badly maintained. They often have terrible potholes. When it comes to signpost, you often have to rely on yourself and your map. If you are going on a self drive safari, please don't hesitate to ask us about your route and the weather / road conditions. We prefer that only people who are experienced in independent self drive travel in Africa undertake a self drive safari in Kenya. That is not necessarily a hard and fast rule - it is just that previous experience will help you to cope with some of the potentially tricky conditions you are likely to encounter there. If you have travelled independently elsewhere and feel confident enough to take on Kenya, we will be pleased to assist you. Some of the areas through which we travel in Kenya are extremely remote and anyone heading off on a self drive safari across these more isolated regions must be prepared to take responsibility for many aspects of their safety. Driving conditions are not straightforward. There may be obstacles on your route such as large trees pushed down by elephant. Graded roads can have quite violent corrugations
 
and even tarmac roads can be testing as they are extremely badly maintained in parts with sections of terrible potholes. There are many areas where signposts simply do not exist and routes are marked with an arbitrary pile of rocks or a daub of paint on a tree; interpretation of these signs is somewhat hit and miss! Camping sites in Kenya are unfenced and very basic (with little or no facilities) and the plentiful game can and will come wandering into camp. Despite the harder driving conditions, Kenya remains a sensational self drive destination and, for those able to cope with a more challenging self drive, it is hugely gratifying. Owing to the conditions in Kenya, we think a very good idea to do an off road driving course prior to departure especially if you do not have much experience of off road 4x4 driving. How Much deposit do I pay for Kenya safari?
 We require 25% deposit on all Kenya safaris wired to our account, and balance is payable at least 10 days prior to commencement of the safari vacation to Kenya. We accept payment by Visa and Master Card but there is a 5% surcharge for Credit Card Payments. It is better to book safaris tours to Kenya as far in advance as possible to ensure availability at the time you wish to travel, especially during the high/peak seasons.
On all Kenya holidays packages international Airfare to and from East Africa is not included. We recommend that you make contact with a local travel agent for this. However, should you encounter difficulties; we can recommend reliable travel agents. We are planning an African safari to Kenya. A tented safari camp and Safaris lodges in Kenya and Tanzania insists that we pay a 25% deposit in advance on the basis that it will be during the wildebeest migration in Masai Mara. Considering that the safari deposit is non-refundable and also we might change our mind as we have 1 year to go before our safari, should we commit with a deposit. The wildebeest migration period is one of the busiest times in Masai Mara plus Serengeti and often tented camps and safaris lodges are fully months in advance. While planning in advance is essential you have to be careful not to commit with a safari deposit before you have counter checked that the choice of accommodation you are making on the safari itinerary and also the tented camps and lodges is the right one. 25% deposit looks to be on the very high side for non-refundable safari deposit but it is essential if you will have a secure booking. Can I take my children on safari?
 Children are very welcomed to accompany their parents on Kenya children safari as most lodges do not have a problem with that. However there are some restrictions with some high class properties that do not take children again these you’ll have to confirm with us before booking your Kenya Child Safari. A safari to Kenya is wonderful for children old enough to enjoy and appreciate the experience. Its advisable that you bring a child to Kenya above 3 years, however with very good planning you could bring children at 2 years. Depending on the Kenya Family Safari, many safaris (e.g., Road safari to Kenya) involve a long trip on rough roads, which we cannot recommend for babies, but we offer Family Safaris to Kenya and Luxury Safaris to Kenya which blend road and air transport, that are carefully planned to ensure the comfort of children and the elderly.
Children less than 12 years benefit from reduced fares on scheduled airlines and at all lodges. A few of the more expensive permanent tented camps prohibit children under 12. Restrictions on certain activities also apply for younger children, so kindly check before booking. Please carry enough baby food and accessories, which might be unavailable on Kenya Family safaris. Special meals for babies cannot be guaranteed. Are There a Variety of Wild Animals?
 In a typical day you can expect to see 15 to 20 animal species- lions, elephants, giraffes and rhinos, to name a few. Buffalo and wildebeest may be in herds of hundreds or more. Others, like the swift cheetah, are more likely to be found alone. And then there are the birds, over 300 species! Birds in Africa are particularly colorful and easy to spot. Even if you've never looked at a bird before, with the help of your driver you'll easily learn to identify twenty to thirty of the most striking and beautiful birds of Africa. Experienced birders can expect to see 60 to 100 different species in a single day.A special thrill is in store if your safari coincides with the annual wildebeest migration. You'll see thunderous herds of wildebeest and zebra, totaling more than 1 million, stretching across the horizon. On their trail follow the predators the big cats, and the scavenger’s hyenas, jackals and vultures. Whenever you go, you'll see animals as you've never seen them before roaming free, just as they have for millions of years. Because you are traveling in protected game reserves, many of the animals have no fear as long as you are in a vehicle. You can get surprisingly close, especially when lions are busy feeding on prey, or at rest. Elephants often walk up to and even surround a minibus. Monkeys and baboons may study you as closely as you study them. But natural behavior will only continue if you give the animals
 some space and are quiet. If you go too close, or talk too loudly, the animals may just leave. Most animals will be more interesting if allowed the space to continue their natural behaviors- stalking, mating, and playing with their young. Your driver will know the best viewing distance. Please do not encourage him to "stalk" or otherwise interfere with hunting or other activities crucial to the animal's survival. No, not if you stay within the marked boundaries of your lodge or in your minibus. Your guide and driver know what is, and is not, safe. Incidents involving animals are rare in East Africa and are, almost without fail, the result of someone doing what they have been advised not to do. Nairobi is a big, bustling city. Avoid wearing flashy jewelry, hold onto your purse and camera bag, beware of clever conmen and don't walk in the city at night. Do not wear money belts, since they can easily be cut off from the rear. It is always a good idea when you travel to keep a photocopy of your passport in your suitcase and another at home. The people are friendly, and the government patrols the game parks - their most treasured resource- for the safety and benefit of all.

How big are the safari groups?
As with everything in life, this is a question of price. If you choose a tailor-made Kenya safari the minimum number of guests is one, however, cost will come down if there are two or more people in your party. Our scheduled safaris depart with a minimum of 4 participants but arrangements can also be made for less than 4 guests.
What if I want to travel on my own?
That is not a problem; you can always have your own tent and room when you pay a single supplement. Alternatively, if you choose to, we will do our best to fit you together with another guest traveling alone or in small groups.
What are the driver-guides like and which language do they speak?

What's the food like on safari?
You will be pleasantly surprised by both the quality and the variety of the food available on your Kenya safari. In most lodges and some camps meals are served buffet-style so you can choose what you like. The food is prepared according to western tastes, with some curries and local cuisine included. Most fresh meat and produce is procured locally and then prepared by expert chefs to the highest standards. Returning guests are consistently amazed by the meals being prepared out in the bush! Vegetarian or diabetic meals can easily be arranged with advanced notice. If you are vegetarian or vegan you may wish to bring along some alternative protein sources. If you have multiple food allergies, you'll definitely want to bring along supplemental snacks. It is important we know of any possible dietary restrictions as soon as possible in order to arrange everything to fit your needs.
