Just wonderful. Your balcony over looks the river, hence the crocodiles. Lunch is fantastic, three courses meal over-looking the hippos in the river. The food is exellent and the wine is very reasonably priced and also very good. The service and meals are so good it is hard to imagine you are in the middle of a National Park but the noisy hippos keep giving you a little reminder.  Dinner is fantastic, you will enjoy a seven-course feast and some more delightful wine served on fine crystal. The restaurant is decorated with photos of Karen Blixen and Finch Hatton. The staff are fantastic and could not do enough to help you. You are escorted back to your tent in time for lights out, 11.30. This is because the lodge is run on generators and they are switched off around 11.30. The tent has mosquito net sides; it is lovely and cool.

The Finch Hattons hotel arranges for you to have breakfast earlier than normal to see the hippos making their way back into the water. Again a huge choice for breakfast for such a small lodge, lots of fruit and cereals and a good selection of hot food. No wonder Finch Hatton put his roots down at this breathtaking safari location, this place will absolutely blow you mind, It's the old Africa, the genteel Africa, the Africa everyone thinks about when they watch films like Born Free and Out of Africa.

From the outset, the surroundings are serene, peaceful and beautiful, even the drive to reception offers views of Bush Pigs, BushBucks. It even boasts its own landing strip and an air plane - how fabulously decadent. The food is unbelievable. What a great excuse to get dressed for dinner. Crystal glasses, silverware and silver service waiting. All this followed by coffee in the leather chesterfield strewn library/study/sitting room. We really can't praise this place enough. The game drives are in a part of Tsavo national park are full of elephant, giraffe, zebra, monkeys, leopard and many others, inlcuding the elusive Klipspringer.

Upon return to your tent, you will be treated to the sound and vision of baby hippos busily munching away - you could watche them all night long. Tsavo National Park is known for its herds of “red elephants”, their skins stained by the ochre dust and mud.  The

Tsavo National Park is home to over 12000 elephant – one of the largest populations in East Africa.  Other commonly seen species include giraffe, zebra, eland, buffalo, impala, hartebeest, bushbuck, wildebeest and many more. An easy hour’s drive from the camp is Mzima Springs, where a gushing supply of fresh, crystal clear water has created an oasis for wildlife.  It is home to several pods of hippo, crocodile and shoals of barbell and catfish.  A specially constructed underwater observatory provides visitors with a unique view into the underwater world of Mzima.

The best time to see game around Finch Hattons Hotel is early morning and late afternoon.  Our morning and afternoon game drives and nature walks offer the best opportunities for spotting game but also give visitors the chance to witness the stunning African dawn or sunset.

The Finch Hattons accommodates up to 50 people in spacious safari “tents” attractively constructed in light beige canvas with large “windows”, wooden flooring and a permanent thatched roof.   All have en-suite bathrooms, large mirrors, WC, hot and cold running water and showers and are equipped with a fully stocked mini bar, shaver outlets for 110v and 200v and hairdryers. The emphasis is on tasteful comfort with either double or twin beds, period brass lamps, writing desks and Afghan ‘Kilims’ All tents are built on elevated platforms with spectacular views of the surrounding springs and forest.  Large wooden decks with a comfortable day bed, chairs and table offer a tranquil and relaxing retreat.

Finch Hattons Camp Restaurant
Finch Hattons has built a solid reputation for producing inspiring gourmet meals in a remote and wild setting.  Standards of food preparation and culinary protocol are unmatched elsewhere in the bush.  Cuisine on the menu is both imaginative and tasteful. Only fresh Kenyan produce of international export quality is used for all meals.Breakfast and lunch are served “al fresco” on the large terrace overlooking the main hippo pool with a backdrop of Mt Kilimanjaro in the distance. Dinner consists of a six course meal served in the elegantly beautiful dining room.  Finch Hattons pride themselves on an extensive cellar of imported wines, a wide range of premium spirits and other preferred beverages from a well stocked bar. Finch Hattons’ chefs are happy to cater for most special dietary requirements and meal preferences.

The main restaurant of Finch Hattons reflects a bygone era of taste and elegance.  In the evening an exquisite dinner of seven courses is served - often to the sound of Mozart.  Although jackets and ties are excused, gentlemen are requested to wear long trousers.

The comfortable lounge and bar areas are elegantly furnished to create an informal country house atmosphere. On the mezzanine floor, guests may enjoy the respite of a cozy library cum reading room.  In addition to a varied choice of books there is also an excellent range of classical and slightly more contemporary music.  Naturally the selection includes many of the Mozart classics favored by Denys Finch Hatton. The bar is open all day and also services the pool terraces.  Indigenous trees surround an elevated swimming pool and shaded deck area where guests can enjoy a refreshing swim or take time to relax between game drives. A small gift shop stocked with a wide range of high quality books and gifts is open throughout the day.

Denys Finch Hatton, an English aristocrat first travelled to East Africa in 1911 at the age of 24 and immediately fell in love with Kenya. His great love of the bush and fascination with wild animals turned him into a dedicated big game hunter. He had a deep understanding and appreciation of nature in addition to the customs and traditions of the Kenyan people.

Denys Finch Hatton was to become well known for his refusal to abandon home comforts, culture and cuisine on safari and insisted that his guests dined with fine china and crystal while listening to gramophone recordings of Mozart.  In inimitable comfort and style he introduced them to his world. Finch Hatton became a byword for stylish, successful Kenya safaris.  His clientele included many American and European tycoons and aristocrats and in 1928 and 1930, he played host to Britain’s Prince of Wales (later Duke of Windsor) At Finch Hattons, we have preserved the ideals that Denys lived for – a dedication to elegance and style coupled with a passionate love of the Kenyan wilderness and a long forgotten way of life
